My mom had been quite hard of hearing for many years when she had a severe heart attack and they "shocked" her back to life (well, I have my own ideas as to WHY she came back...). But after this attack, never again was her hearing bad...she could hear quite well after that, though other aspects of her health slowly went downhill and eventually she died. But isn't that strange...interesting story you shared here too.
